Jim Jump writes: This image was seen by millions of TV viewers in Britain and Spain during the live broadcast on Saturday night (November 12th) of an England-Spain soccer game in London (which Spain lost, by the way). The placard appeared on screen for several seconds during the two-minute silence for Britain’s war dead before the kick-off. The official annual ceremonies of remembrance, for which a red poppy is the emblem, were held at war memorials throughout Britain on the following day. The identity of the holder of the placard is unknown. Nor is it known whether the ITV Sport producers understood its significance, as the dead of the Spanish Civil War are not included in these acts of remembrance.
