The Morning Star has published two items on Sam Lesser, the British IB vet and chairman of the International Brigade Memorial Trust, who passed away last week: a brief notice and an obituary by Roger Bagley:

The Daily Worker also sent Lesser to Cuba as the world held its breath over the 1962 crisis arising from US threats against the stationing of Soviet missiles on the island. He interviewed an animated and unrepentant Che Guevara talking in Spanish together from 10pm until 3am the next morning. Che was in full flow declaring that if the rockets had been under Cuban control they would have retaliated against any US aggression by shooting the Yankee boats out of the water and firing on US cities. Daily Worker editor George Matthews decided to publish only a heavily edited version of Che’s interview with the most militant phrases cut out.
