Killing Franco, 1963
Ronan Bennett, writing in the Guardian to lament the demise of the UK Film Council, fondly recalls a recent documentary project based on the memoirs of Stuart Christie, the legendary Anarchist bookseller (with the world’s best SCW film website), who in 1963 helped conspire to kill the victor of the Spanish Civil War:
Whether they are made over lunch at a fancy restaurant or over the coffee table of an office, film pitches have their own ritual. … “This is a true story, set in the early 60s. It’s about an 18-year-old boy from Glasgow who travels to Madrid to assassinate General Franco.”
