Ziff’s “Mexican Suitcase” opens in NYC and Spain this weekend
On Friday, the same day the film opens at movie theaters in Spain, Trisha Ziff’s gripping documentary The Mexican Suitcase is being screened at ALBA’s Human Rights Film Festival (Museum of the City of New York, tickets here, trailer here). See here for coverage in the Spanish press today. The Suitcase is one of five outstanding recent documentaries screened at the ALBA Human Rights film series (full program here); the film tells the story of the recovery of 4,500 negatives taken by photographers Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, and David Seymour during the Spanish Civil War, following the negatives’ journey of these negatives to Mexico: images as exiles, recovered seventy years later. Brings together the narratives of the suitcase and the exile story, the film also looks at how people in Spain today address their own past, 30 years after the democratic transition.
