Ángel Gurría Quintana reviews The Wrong Blood, Manuel de Lope’s newly translated Spanish Civil War novel, for the Financial Times:

The Wrong Blood … is set in the Basque country, near the French border, in what one character calls “the most eccentric corner of Spain”. … The greatest tragedy is not in the debacle engulfing the country, but in the stories of intimate loss that string together its protagonists. … The book’s climactic moment, and the most bloody, occurs as the widowed Isabel, assisted by doctor Castro, delivers her baby. It is moving and harrowing, and resounds more deeply than any description of the deaths occurring on Spain’s many battlefronts.
